Something blue

dukker

Everyone’s getting married this summer, and the weekend that just passed was no exception. Congratulations sweet M&J! I heart you!

In the car on the way back from the party, the experienced married couple (1 year) gave us the ‘marriage is nothing but hard work’-spiel.

Whereby Marianne (not married yet) replies: -Yeah, my friend told me that you can marry anyone, after a few years it doesn’t matter who that person is, all you do is work hard to stay together.

I find the thought of commitment quite suffocating, so if I had a boyfriend, maybe I would just date him till my dying day. Maye we would just keep our apartments and invite each other over for romantic dinners and talk on the phone in the middle of the night. Beats discussing the bills and arguing over who’s turn it is to take out the trash.

When you come to the edge of all that you know, you must believe one of two things: There will be earth upon which to stand, or you will be given wings to fly.

Just came home from Mari’s fab bachelorette party, and the most natural thing to do in the middle of the night with wine inside is hmm, planning the future.

While everyone else is strutting diamonds and pregnant bellies, I am entering a phase where romance is on hold out and career is definitely in.

Inspired by the Dutchess, I started writing down my career goals and the steps to get there. The list is ever-growing, including getting our business off the ground, an introduction to cinematography in Abu Dhabi, documentary production in Kenya, grad school in HK and much much more. All in the next 2-3 years.

And the moral of the story: Scary as it is, the business-opportunities are presenting themselves TODAY. The people who will write my letters of recommendation are the people I work with TODAY. My tuition fees are paid for with money I set aside TODAY.

Daydreaming is fun, and I always imagined myself doing all these things. But so soon? Now that’s motivation to get up a little earlier in the morning.

Hungry

“Every morning in Africa, a gazell wakes up knowing that it must outrun the fastest lion or else it will be killed. Every morning in Africa a lion wakes up knowing that it must outrun the slowest gazell otherwise it will sleep hungry…whether you are “the” gazelle or the lion, when morning comes…you must be running!”

I nicked this off Yvonne. That explains why African people are so fearless and eager to take risks to fulfill their dreams.

I WANT to be FEARLESS. *sigh*

Nairobi CSI

I came across this small, dull looking ad in a local paper back in the days when I was interning in a Nairobi newsroom. So, it is for real. And man did it cause a stir.
